Cosmin Florin Moldovan, born in 1976 in Arad, Romania, lives and works in the same city.
Moldovan is a Romanian visual artist whose academic background includes a degree in sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the West University of Timișoara (1999), followed by a Master’s degree in 2006 and a PhD in Visual Arts in 2010. While his practice is rooted in sculpture, Moldovan also works across painting and drawing, developing a formally rigorous language concerned with fragmentation, memory, and the evolution of form.
Through volumetric tension, architectural structures, and material contrast, his works explore a kind of inner topography—where the body, form, and myth are reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. His visual vocabulary draws on historical and symbolic iconographies, reshaped through processes of abstraction, erasure, and regeneration.
In 2021, he presented the solo exhibition Errors, Visual Arts Center, Bucharest, following its earlier iteration at the Art Museum in Arad (2020). Other notable projects include Fragments of Our Identity, Art Museum, Arad, and UJ Kriterion Gallery, Miercurea Ciuc, 2015; Fragments of Your Lost Memories, Cultural Center Palatele Brâncovenești, Mogoșoaia, 2013; Fragment of Red Memories, Machina Gallery, Rieti, 2012; Footmark, Calina Gallery, Timișoara, 2010; Notes Between Clouds and Traces, Atelier 030202, Bucharest, 2010; Stories with Body and Soul, Triade Foundation, Timișoara, 2005; and Very Colorful, Delta Gallery, Arad, 2005. In 2024, he was selected among the most representative Romanian artists for the exhibition Monstrul, pătratul și hohotul (The Monster, the Square and the Laughter) at MARe / Museum of Recent Art, Bucharest—a major reconfiguration of the museum's collection, exploring Romanian contemporary art through the lenses of archaism and humor. Moldovan has been recognized with the Romanian Artists' Union Youth Award (2006, ex aequo) and the “Ovidiu Maitec” Sculpture Prize at the Meeting Point Biennale, Arad (2009), underlining his long-standing contribution to the Romanian contemporary scene.
« My artistic practice reflects an internal morphology, mirrored in volumetric movements and the fragmented architecture of form. This process attributes new meanings to icons erased by time, reconfiguring their presence within a contemporary context. By navigating between materiality and abstraction, I seek to evoke the fragile balance between memory, decay, and regeneration. »
