Rostislav (Rostia) Kunovsky, who has been living and working in France for over 40 years, is a Czech artist born in Gottwaldov-Zlín, Czechoslovakia.
He studied architecture and fine arts at the University Paris 1 - Panthéon-Sorbonne, France. Kunovsky's work spans a variety of media, including oil painting, engraving, photography, graphics, monotypes, collage, and découpage. He has had a long artistic fascination with trees, depicting them in many of his works using oil paint, inks, and sprays.
Although he is primarily an abstract artist, he does not shy away from figuration, particularly in his urban landscapes. In his works, Kunovsky highlights the fleeting nature of life, its rhythm, and the mysteries of human existence. He seamlessly blends, combines, and intertwines various techniques. British art critic John Berger once remarked that Kunovsky’s works are not somber; rather, they are filled with a thousand lives and a thousand solitudes, in which we recognize ourselves.
Rostia has held more than 25 solo exhibitions across Europe, including in Paris, Marseille, Dijon, Geneva, London, and Prague. He has also participated in group exhibitions in Paris, Clamart, London, and Barcelona. He currently resides in Châtenay-Malabry, France.
